During the 1960's when Professor John McCabe was writing his authorised biography of The Boys, "MR LAUREL AND MR HARDY" he wrote to Stan Laurel and asked him whether he would have any objection to a group being formed on the lines of the Baker Street Irregulars, the Society devoted to Sherlock Holmes. Stan Laurel was delighted and when he learned that the new group would have celebration as its theme. he thoroughly approved and even helped with the group's constitution. The Society's name, suggested by the late Al Kilgore, derives from Laurel and Hardy's 1933 film. "SONS OF THE DESERT" in which The Boys pledge their loyalties to a national lodge.
